The Next Goat

Recently I was driving through the midwest, passing by farmland I noticed a herd of goats gathered around a bucket of grain. Which got me thinking, over the years we’ve seen goats like Joe Montana,Jerry Rice, Rob Gronkowski. All of them play different positions but have one thing in common, they’ve all gathered around the Lombardi trophy.

Before 2019, looking at the NFL Tom Brady was at the top of the pyramid. Brady was drafted into the NFL in 2000 to New England. In Brady's first three seasons he took the Patriots to the Superbowl and won. Brady went to the Superbowl ten times, and won seven out of the ten. Brady came into the NFL and people looked at him as a joke.

In the 2000 NFl combine, you could tell that Brady wasn’t gonna be a 1st round pick. Bradys score didn’t prove anything, certainly no one thought he was gonna go on to win seven super bowls.

Coming from Texas Tech University, Patrick Mahomes came into the NFl and dominated. All 5 years of Mahomes' career he has taken the chiefs to the AFC championship, three out of the five he's taken them to the superbowl. In Brady’s first year he took the patriots all the way to the superbowl and ended up winning against the St louis Rams, 20-17.

Looking at Mahomes stats so far it’s almost identical. Mahomes' first year he took the Chiefs all the way to the superbowl and won against the 49er 31-20. In Mahomes 2nd year he took the Chiefs to the superbowl going up against Tampa and he faced Brady. The Buccaneers won 31-9. Most would write off Mahomes and say he’s not even close to Bradys level after losing, but most aren’t keeping in mind that it was Mahomes second season while it was Brady's 19th season in the NFL.

Needless to say Mahomes is a great quarterback, however there is one team that Mahomes couldn’t beat, the Cincinnati bengals. Joe Burrow came into the NFL in 2020 but they didn’t play the Chiefs due to covid. Since the 2021 season every time the Bengals and the Chiefs play each other Burrow has outplayed Mahomes every time.

Mahomes finally beat Cincinnati in this year's AFC championship, 23-20. Burrow is in his 3rd year of the NFL and not only did he outplay Mahomes he outplayed Brady and has never lost.

Joe Burrow and Patrick Mahomes are arguably some of the NFL’s greatest quarterbacks. I can’t say that one is better than the other, someone will always have their opinion and maybe they think that Jalen Hurts is better, but I can say with certainty Burrow and Mahomes will gather around the Lombardi trophy plenty of times in their career.
