Cooper Flagg is quickly proving himself in the league. Flagg averages 17.3 ppg and just passed Kon Knueppel in the Kia Rookie of the Year award. (Being 3rd on the list just two weeks ago)
Flagg is already breaking records and changing the game. On Nov. 29th, Flagg became the youngest player at 18 years old to put up 35 points in a single game. Passing LeBron James and Kobe Bryant.
The Mavericks aren’t doing well this season despite Flags’ successes. Dallas is currently 11th in the Western Conference, and a record of 9-16. On Friday, the Mavericks went up against the reigning champions, OKC, and they lost by 21 points. This was a wake-up call for them to realize that the road to being NBA champions was far ahead. It’s going to take more than just Flagg on the court to get them there.
If the Mavericks continue down this road, it’s uncertain that they will make the playoffs, and even if they make the playoffs, going far would be unlikely. They just aren’t top contenders yet; they need more time.
Teams like the Thunder, Lakers, Knicks, Pistons, Celtics, and even the Magic are shaping up to be some of the top teams this season. The Thunder, Lakers, Pistons, and the Knicks have played and beaten the Mavericks.
Thunder: 132 – Mavs: 111
Lakers: 129 – Mavs: 119
Pistons: 122 – Mavs: 110
Knicks: 113 – Mavs: 111
Had the Mavericks not traded Luka Doncic, this would most likely be a different story. However, the reality is that Dallas needs time to build a new roster, and the players need to develop chemistry.
There have been trade rumors that the Mavericks would send Anthony Davis, D’Angelo Russel, and Dante Exum to the LA Clippers in exchange for John Collins, Bogdan Bogdanovic, Derrick Jones Jr., and Brook Lopez. They would also get future draft picks.
This would be very helpful for the Mavericks to add depth and experience to their team, as well as for future draft picks.
Only time will tell.
