Why can’t Women coach?

Updated: Dec 4, 2022

When you combine the NFL, NHL, NBA, and MLB you get 124 teams, how are there no female coaches? Yes, there are many female assistant coaches, regardless out of those 124 teams there are no female head coaches, how is that possible? Even in the WNBA there are only six women who serve as a head coach, meaning that a Women dominated sport has only 6 female head coaches, the other 6 being male.

In 1972 Title IX passed, which allowed women more opportunities in the sports industry. However before Title IX was passed, according to the New York Times, “women were head coaches of more than 90 percent of women’s college teams.” Today, only about 40 percent of females are head coaches of women's sports.

Becky Hammon, who has well deserved her spot as a head coach in the NBA, said in an interview with the Chicago Tribune. “There’s 30 jobs and they are incredibly hard to get. When I say there are 30 jobs, not all 30 are available, so I’m really talking about three or four.” Becky was the first women to be a female head coach in the summer league, and she ended up leading the spurs to a title.

For some reason no one has ever really talked or brought up the fact that women don’t have the same opportunities to become a head coach, probably because we’re women. It’s not because we aren’t capable of it, I mean Becky Hammon lead the spurs to a title in the summer. If you believe that women haven’t become head coaches of a male sport, due to the fact that women are to emtional or don't have the capcity to understand sports. Then I suggest you re- read this whole article again because, women are already capable, it’s just all about how women change the perspective and how the world perceives them, that's the change that needs to be made.
